He is also Director of the Ophthalmic Pathology and Oncology Service at St Eriks Eye Hospital, a unique, national referral unit.

Stefan Seregard completed undergraduate training at Karolinska Institutet and residencies in anatomical (surgical) pathology and ophthalmology at Danderyds, Karolinska and St Eriks Eye Hospitals, Stockholm, Sweden and then obtained dual board certifications. A fellowship in ophthalmic pathology was pursued at the Institute of Ophthalmology, London, U.K. Stefan Seregard presented his Ph.D. thesis at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm and current research projects are largely focused to epidemiological, clinical and experimental aspects of uveal and conjunctival melanoma. He travels widely, has held numerous eponymous lectures and publishes extensively.

Stefan Seregard is currently (2015) President of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) and the European Ophthalmic Pathology Society (EOPS). He is Past President of the Swedish Ophthalmological Society and has served as International Advisor to the board of trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the board of directors of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and the European Association of Retina Specialists (Euretina) and others. Stefan Seregard has served as expert reviewer to various funding bodies including the Wolfson Foundation, London, U.K. and the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. He is currently section editor of five leading scientific ophthalmic journals and is a member of a large number of learned international societies including the European Academy of Ophthalmology and the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis.
