Qualified 1979, University of London. Did general surgery, then neurosurgery before settling on ophthalmology. Postgraduate training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, including Fellowship with Richard Collin 1988.

Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon since 1991 with particular interest in surgical rehabilitation (ocular cicatricial disease, thyroid ophthalmopathy, facial palsy, tumour defect reconstruction). Created the specialised Lid Oncology service at Moorfields.

Lifelong involvement in training, particularly for those who are struggling. Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the European Board of Ophthalmology for almost 20 years as well as being educational supervisor and trainee mentor for nearly as long. Chairman of newly established ESOPRS examination board (European society of ophthalmic plastic & reconstructive surgeons).
