Astigmatism

What is astigmatism and the evaluation
• How different instrument measure it an the source of error (autoref., skiascopy, keratometer (jawal, hemolz) aberrometer, topographer, tomographer
• Topography: how to evaluate it in different algorithm (elevation, instantaneous, sagittal, pupil position and angle K)
• Tomography: When is pure astigmatism

  • How much come from anterior cornea, how much from post
  • Is it always astigmatism?
  • How to detect early stages of ectasia and/or other corneal pathologies

• Aberrometry: Can we identify what is astigmatism and what is coma and other HOA that can apparently increase the amount of refractive astigmatism
• Refracting a pts with astigmatism, which is the best way? (Aberrometry approach)
• Anterior segment OCT and astigmatism are different layer in cornea make a difference?
• Internal astigmatism what is it?

  • Posterior cornea
  • Lens
  • Retinal surface

The Cause
• How to analyse an astigmatism
• The source of astigmatism:

  •  Congenital
  •  Trauma
  •  Leucomas/scars
  •  Cataract
  •  Keratoconus
  •  Corneal Graft
  •  Refractive surgery
  •  Dry eye
  •  Pellucid marginal degeneration and Muren

The correction on the cornea
• Surface ablation
• Intra-stromal ablation
• Custom ablation or optimized ablation
• Relaxing incision
• Intra-stromal lens
• Complication and their solution
The correction with intraocular surgery
• Toric IOL
• Phakic IOL
• Iris fixated
• Posterior chamber IOL
• Piggy back implants

Which instruments help us?
• Complication and their solution

The follow up : what is useful to look in the post –op?
Corneal Correction
• Did I change the corneal shape as planned, how to measure it?
• The way to predict regression
• The evaluation of effective O.Z. optical qualities and their implication
• The epithelial lens and OCT

Intraocular correction
• How to measure the axis of IOL
• The refraction is not the planned! Is it an biometric error or a toric misalignment?
• How to make a vectorial analysis of sphere and cyl post-op

Retreatment
• IOL exchange or alignment
• Corneal retreatment

Post-op therapies

Language

The official congress language is English: simultaneous translation will be provided only from English into Italian.
